GLACIER MONITORING ON TOP OF ITALY
In a bid to address the impacts of climate change on alpine glaciers, our researchers have been at the forefront of developing an innovative radar system named Snowave. This radar technology, initially designed for monitoring snow cover, has evolved to offer non-destructive measurements of glacier thickness and valuable insights into glacier health. Conducting practical field tests in collaboration with Fondazione Montagna Sicura, the team’s efforts aim to assess glacier conditions and contribute to broader glacier-related research.

HIGH SCHOOL STAGE/PTCO 2023
On Monday 26th of June, the researchers of the MWLAB conducted a theoretical and experimental lecture for high school students participating in a summer stage at our university. The students were introduced to the concept of microwaves and learned about the main research topics in microwave technology carried out in our laboratory. After the presentations, the students had the opportunity to visit our laboratory, including a visit to the anechoic chamber. Following that, a series of experiments were conducted to demonstrate and validate the concepts taught during the previous lectures.

Snow is a very important environmental variable and a primary water resource in many areas of the world. Monitoring seasonal snowpack properties is crucial for properly managing snow-related hazards such as snow avalanches and snowmelt-floods. Microwave radars have been proposed as a mean to non-destructively monitor snowpacks, but they face several problems. From the electromagnetic point of view, snow is a complex material that can change its electromagnetic properties within seconds. Moreover, it is almost impossible to be studied inside a laboratory and some of the sites for studying the snow in good conditions can be hard-to-reach and with adverse meteorological conditions. All these aspects make the study of snow a real challenge. This seminar will focus on the techniques to study the snow using microwaves and how these techniques are applied in the field.
