Luca Perregrini was born in Sondrio, Italy, in 1964. He received the “Laurea” degree in Electronic Engineering and the Ph.D. in Electronics and Computer Science in 1989 and 1993, respectively. He joined the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Pavia in 1992 as an Assistant Professor in electromagnetics. Since 2004 he is an Associate Professor with the Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering of the University of Pavia, where he is also responsible of the Microwave Laboratory. Since 1995 he has been teaching courses in Electromagnetic Field Theory, Microwaves, Circuit Theory, Microwave Measurements, Numerical Techniques for Electromagnetics. He has been the tutor of several Ph.D. students and the supervisor of many MS and BS students. He has been a visiting professor at the École Polytechnique de Montréal, Québec, Canada in 2001, 2002, 2005, and 2006.
Prof. Perregrini has been responsible of many research contracts with prominent international research centers and companies. His main research interests have been focused on the development of numerical methods for electromagnetics, and the design of microwave components and antennas. The most significant results of these activities are: the implementation of numerical codes, based on the BI-RME method, for the wideband modeling of waveguide components; the development of the MoM/BI-RME method for the modeling and design of inductive and capacitive frequency selective surfaces (FSS), of electromagnetic bandgap structures (EBG), and of multilayer planar circuits; the implementation of compact and broadband substrate integrated waveguides (SIW) transmission lines, including the ridge SIW, the substrate integrated slab waveguide (SISW), and the substrate integrated coaxial line (SICL); the development of several innovative components in SIW technology, including the first active SIW antenna appeared in the literature, a steerable active array with no need of phase shifters, and novel SIW filter structures; the design of dichroic mirrors installed in the Deep Space Antennas of the European Space Agency; the development of FSS at mm-wave frequency (up to 2 THz), both in all-metal configuration and based on a silicon dielectric substrate; the design of circuits and systems for industrial application of microwaves for heating and processing of materials; the design of cavity resonators for particle accelerators.
He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a member of the Technical Committee MTT–15 (Microwave Field Theory) of IEEE MTT Society, a member of the Board of Directors of the European Microwave Association (EuMA), and a member of the Societa’ Italiana di Elettromagnetismo (SIEm), and he has been a member of the General Assembly of EuMA (2011-2013).
Prof. Perregrini is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques (since 2013), International Journal of Microwave and Wireless Technologies (since 2011), IET Electronic Letters (since 2015), and a Gest Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques (Jan. 2015) and of the International Journal of Microwave and Wireless Technologies (June 2015), and he was Associate Editor of the IEEE Microwave and Wireless Components Letters (2010-2013). He co-edited the book Periodic Structures, (Research Signpost, 2006). He also serves as a reviewer for many international scientific journals and as a project reviewer for international institutions. He has been appointed General Conference Chair of the European Microwave Week, Rome 2020, and he was the Chair of the Technical Conference Program of the IEEE MTT-S International Conference on Numerical Electromagnetic Modeling and Optimization (NEMO2014) (Pavia, Italy, May 2014), and the Technical Program Committee Chair of the European Microwave Conference (Rome, Italy, Oct. 2014), and member of technical program committees of several international conferences, including the IEEE International Microwave Symposium and the European Microwave Week. He also served as a member of prize committees for several conferences/societies.
Prof. Perregrini has been an invited speaker at several conferences, and has delivered invited seminar talks in Universities and research centers worldwide. He was the co-recipient of the Best Paper Award at the 15th Mediterranean Microwave Symposium (MMS2015), of the Best Student Award at the 4th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP 2010), and the 2nd Best Student Paper Award at the 27th Int. Review of Progress in Applied Computational Electromagnetics (ACES 2010).
Prof. Perregrini authored or co-authored more than 80 journal papers and more than 230 conference papers, 6 book chapters, and 2 textbooks.
